Selling Your Screenplay

Before you begin Selling your Screenplay, ask yourself a couple of questions. What kind of a screenwriter are you? Telling a story with a fresh approach can be a challenge to any writer. As a screenwriter you want to create your own style, unique from the rest. Perhaps you have spent many years writing. Or you are a new screenwriter who is just getting started in this venture. Whichever one you are, developing your style and uniqueness takes time. Devoting yourself to your writing and to creating a story that will inspire others takes talent and skill, as well as time and discipline. The ability to use words to your advantage can seem like a challenge; but when you allow yourself the time to sit down and climb inside each one of your characters, the payoff is the ultimate.

Before you begin selling your screenplay to Hollywood, it is best for you to know your screenplays market.

It is part of the job for you, as a screenwriter to know your market. Knowing what type of marketing strategy would work best for your screenplay can be critical to the success of your film script. Knowing which genre your screenplay falls into is a good place to start. As a screenwriter, you need to have a clear vision of your screenplay before you can present it to literary agents and producers. This is a key element to knowing how to get your screenplay read.

The different types of film genres or categories you can choose from are a list of eighteen. They are the following:

Action, Adventure, Comedy, Crime, Documentary, Drama, Family, Fantasy, Horror, Musical, Mystery, Romance, Science Fiction, Sport, Suspense, Thriller, War and Western.

When selling your screenplay, you may feel that your screenplay falls into several of these categories or genres.

The film script you have written might be considered an action adventure with a hint of romance. Or it could be a family drama with a lot of suspense thrown in. It also might be a family drama set in the old west. Or perhaps, your film script is a mystery where the plot is a basic who done it. Where you have gone ahead and added an edge of comedy to make it more light hearted and not so serious. Whatever your vision is for your film script, there is a market where you can present it.

Once you know where your market is for your screen play, you can begin looking for literary agents to present your screen play to. As you submit your query letters make sure to submit them only to the literary agents that represent that specific genre. Selling your screenplay takes an approach of realism on your part. Knowing which genre your screen play fits into, puts you ahead of the game.
